Irwin Chan
Translated from French
"My name is Irwin Chan, and I’ve been an occupational therapist since December 2021. Since my childhood, I have always had a deep interest in science, biology, and physical activity. These passions naturally led me towards the healthcare field.
After completing my college studies, I enrolled in the occupational therapy program at the University of Montreal, where I deepened my knowledge of the practice of an occupational therapist in various settings: CLSCs, CHSLDs, hospitals, URFIs, and private clinics. It was during my final internship at CMME that my interest in private practice and physical health truly solidified, a pivotal experience that shaped my professional journey.
I began my journey at CMME as an occupational therapy intern in a small clinic in St-Michel. After graduating, I had the opportunity to work in the St-Léonard, Hochelaga, and now Anjou clinics. So far, these experiences have allowed me to develop extensive expertise in rehabilitation, collaborating with passionate healthcare professionals and exceptional colleagues. Today, I also have the privilege of sharing my knowledge by mentoring my own interns. CMME is a true family that continues to grow, and contributing actively to its development is an experience both enriching and fulfilling.
For me, being an occupational therapist in a private clinic means, first and foremost, guiding my patients through their rehabilitation process and helping them regain a level of autonomy that suits them. It also means listening, supporting, and encouraging my patients every step of the way. I learn just as much from my patients as they learn from me, and this reciprocal trust is, for me, the most rewarding aspect of my work as an occupational therapist.
In the years ahead, I see myself continuing to work in healthcare, while developing expertise in hand therapy and contributing to the training of new occupational therapists. In the longer term, I aspire to go beyond my role as a clinical occupational therapist and acquire the necessary skills to become a strong healthcare manager."
